The Weather Report
The community is located in an area of the state that has been referred
to as "a gift of nature." In meteorological terminology, it
lies within what is known as an isothermal belt. It is a rather unusual
weather phenomenon that tends to bless a land area with more moderate
temperatures, both winter and summer, than would otherwise be true for
given latitude, altitude, and related topographical features. The practical
effect is to make for year-round outdoor activity.
The resort lies between the Blue Ridge Mountains, which rise more than
3,000 feet above mean sea level on the east, and the Great Smokey Mountains
on the west, reaching to elevations of 5,000 to 6,000 feet. Consequently,
the mountains valley in which Fairfield Mountains is located, is protected
by imposing barriers that tend to hold back the flow of cold winter air
coming eastward and southward. It is relatively uncommon in the midst
of winter for temperature readings to remain below freezing throughout
the winter day.
Average high and low temperature readings for the three summer months
and three winter months in nearby Asheville (the closest official weather
reporting station) are reported by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration as follows:
| December: high 50 / low 29 |
June: high 80 / low 58 |
| January: high 46 / low 25 |
July: high 83 / low 63 |
| February: high 50 / low 27 |
August: high 82 / low 62 |
| Average annual precipitation: 48 inches |
| Average annual snowfall: 15 inches |
